About CLUNK cbg:

Mark Slankard handcrafts CLUNK cigar box guitars and folk instruments in Rocky River, Ohio, each possessing its own unique personality and offering a blend of artistry, character, and charm. These creations serve both as playable instruments and beautiful objects.

Constructed from cigar boxes, wood, metal, simple electronics, and guitar parts, CBGs typically feature three strings, although variations include the one-string diddly bow, 2-string bass, and 4+ string versions. There are long or short scale variations and options like chromatic and diatonic necks, fretted and fretless slide necks, acoustic, electric, and electro-acoustic setups, with pickups ranging from magnetic to piezo. Body designs vary from stick-on-box (SOB) to neck-through, and additional instruments like dobro-style resonators made from paint cans and license plates, banjos, canjos, and lap steels are also available.

Cigar box guitars are usually tuned to an open chord, most commonly open G (GDg), making them easy to play. Diatonic necks, resembling dulcimer (or do-re-mi) necks, simplify playing even further, as they only feature the correct notes for the major scale. Chromatic necks and fretless slide necks offer a gateway to playing the blues, with a sound spectrum ranging from bright and clear to gritty distortion.

CLUNK CBGs use variety of hardwoods, including cedar for cigar boxes and maple, mahogany, oak, and poplar for necks, are used in construction. Fretboards may incorporate high-quality tonewoods like rosewood, mahogany, maple, zebrawood, and purpleheart, among others.

Each CLUNK instrument is unique, reflecting its own distinctive character and aesthetic. Mark Slankard also crafts accessories such as guitar straps, mini battery-powered amplifiers, and acoustic and electric stomp boxes.
